These cells, tendon forming cells, tendon fibroblasts, called also tenocytes or tendinocytes, are highly specialized elongated fibroblasts and fibrocytes (for overview see also: Amiel et al, 1984; Benjamin and Ralphs, 2000). They are located between the collagenous tendon fibers and produce the main constituents of tendons (collagen and elastin embedded in a proteoglycan-water matrix) (Kannus, 2000). Tenocytes are identified usually as elongated tendon cells. Ovoid tendon cells are taken usually for tenoblasts, the immature precursors of tenocytes.
