[thymic epithelial cell]
Thymic epithelial cells (abbr. TECs) are heterogeneous stromal cells (Sawanobori Y et al, 2014; for isolation and identification protocols see also: Xing and Hogquist, 2014; Ohigashi and Takahama, 2016). The epithelium of the thymus contains two main cell types that are being referred to as cortical thymic epithelial cells (abbr. cTEC) and medullary thymic epithelial cells (abbr. mTEC) (see also: thymus epithelial reticular cells). Distinct subsets of thymic epithelial cells that support T-cell development and selection have been termed thymic nurse cells. Positive selection of functionally distinct
