rarely used also: thyreocytes. The spherical follicles (acini) of the thyroid gland absorb iodine. These follicles consist of a single continuous layer of thyrocytes (thyroid epithelial cells, thyroid follicular cells, thyroid acinar cells). There are two types of thyroid epithelial cells. Follicular cells are derived from foregut endoderm. Another type is of neuroectoderma origin (see: C-cells). Thyroblasts are fetal thyroid germ cells.
