Tissue plasminogen activator is known mainly for its activity as a serine protease (EC3.4.21.68) expressed by vascular endothelial cells. The enzyme plays a key role in fibrinolysis by activating the proenzyme plasminogen to plasmin (for a review of its pharmacological application in the treatment of ischemic stroke see: Frey, 2005).
