abbr. TM cells. The trabecular meshwork (TM) is a specialized tissue located at the chamber angle of the eye next to the cornea. Trabecular meshwork cells are involved in regulating aqueous humor outflow and intraocular pressure. These cells are needed for maintaining a pressure gradient between intraocular pressure (approximately 17 mmHg) and venous pressure (approximately 10 mmHg). Thus, they play a major role in the progression of glaucoma, in which the resistance to aqueous humor outflow is increased due to an increase in different forms of extracellular material deposited within the cribriform layer (Lütjen-Drecoll, 1999).
