abbr. TAF (a term with multiple meanings). This protein is expressed by Trypanosoma brucei, the agent causing African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness). TAF is most likely a procyclin or one of its derivatives, glycosylphosphatidylinsitol-anchored proteins on the surface of procyclic (insect) form trypanosomes. TAF mediates cell death by apoptosis in mouse-brain and human-brain vascular endothelial cells (Pearson et al, 2000; Stiles et al, 2004).
