Tuft cells have been identified first in the rat trachea (Rhodin and Dalhamn, 1956) and mouse gastrointestinal tract (Jarvi and Keyrilainen, 1956) and also in the gastrointestinal mucosa of the rat (Isomäki et al, 1973) and humans (Gerbe et al, 2011). Tuft cells are a rare type of intestinal epithelial cells of unknown function (for overview see: Gerbe F et al, 2012). These cells are characterized by long and blunt microvilli with prominent rootlets, and by a well-developed tubulovesicular system in the supranuclear cytoplasm (Sato and Miyoshi, 1997; Sato, 2007). They are most likely the same cells that have been described independently as S-Cells and agranular light cells. See also:
