abbr. TAF (a term with multiple meanings). Tumor-derived adhesion factor has been purified as a major secretory protein (30 kDa) with cell-adhesion activity from the conditioned medium of human bladder carcinoma cells (EJ-1 cells) (Akaogi et al, 1994, 1996). TAF stimulates the growth of BALB/c 3T3 cells and significantly enhances cell growth mediated by IGF or insulin. The synergistic growth stimulation is completely blocked by heparin (Akaogi et al, 1994). The protein has been shown to contribute to the organization of new capillary vessels in tumor tissues (see also: Angiogenesis) by modulating the interaction of endothelial cells with collagen type 4 (Akaogi et al, 1996).
