[tumor-infiltrating natural killer cells] abbr. TINK-cells. By definition these cells are tumor-resident NK-cells. A characteristic feature of these cells is that they fail to lyse tumor cells. Their marker profiles and properties may vary, depending on the tumor in which they are found, and thus they do not constitute a distinct and single class of NK-cells. The cells are thought to be involved in a process that allows cancer cell survival (see also: immunoediting).
Carrega et al (2008) have reported that NK-cells infiltrating human non-small cell lung cancers are highly enriched in the CD56(bright) CD16(-)
