abbr. UCB. Blood taken from the umbilical cord has been shown to contain hematopoietic stem cells and progenitor cells (see also: hematopoiesis) and is used to enrich for these cell types. Hematopoietic stem cells isolated from various other sources (bone marrow, fetal liver, mobilized peripheral blood) may differ from those isolated from umbilical cord blood in their immunogenic and reconstitutive capacity (Korbling and Anderlini, 2001).
