[viral inhibitor of Bak oligomerization] This protein, named by Cam et al (2010), is encoded by open reading frame m41.1 of MCMV [murine cytomegalovirus] (MCMV m41.1; murine cytomegalovirus m41.1). Rat CMV contains a related gene, but a sequence homolog to m41.1 is not present in the genome of human CMV. The protein is localized to mitochondria, interacts with BAK, and inhibits its oligomerization, thereby blocking BAK-dependent cytochrome C release and cell death by apoptosis.
