[viral interferon regulatory factor-2] This protein is encoded by an open reading frame in the genome of KSHV (KSHV orfK11) [Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus], also known as HHV-8. vIRF2 encodes a protein of 18 kDa. vIRF2 does not bind specifically to the IRS (interferon response sequence) in interferon-stimulated genes but binds to the NF-kappa-B binding site. The authors suggest that, by interacting with cellular transcription factors and cofactors, vIRF2 may modulate the expression of early inflammatory genes and potentially deregulate the immune system (Burtsek et al, 1999).
