[vascular mural cell]
This term refers to cell types found in the walls of blood vessel that are not endothelial cells. These cells act as accessory cells or support cells. They provide vessel stability and are essential components of blood vessels required for normal development, homeostasis, and organ function (see also: angiogenesis).
The term often refers to pericytes but can include also other cell types such as smooth muscle cells and fibroblasts. The term perivascular cells is used synonymously for vascular mural cells.
