vasculogenic mimicry
This term pertains to some changes in genetically deregulated aggressive tumor cells that turn themselves into microvascular channels (fluid conducting networks lined by tumor cells, lacking endothelial cells, and delimited by extracellular matrix) rather than exploiting mechanisms of blood vessel formation of the host (see also: angiogenic switch) (Döme et al, 2007). Tumor vasculature is generated de novo. The process, first observed in intraocular melanoma cells (Folberg et al, 1992, 1993; Maniotis et al, 1999), does not involve endothelial cells and is independent of normal angiogenesis involving endothelial cells.
