This entry is one of the MiniCOPE Dictionaries within COPE. Most entries provide a brief description of the functions of the different types of cells found in eukaryotic organisms together with a list of cytokines, growth factors, receptors, and other proteins that they express or secrete (within the scope of COPE, of course). If a factor is not listed, this does not mean that the cells in question do not express it). The references have been selected primarily to reflect different phenotypes, subpopulations, and different aspects of gene regulation.

You will note that this subdictionary contains more than 2000 names, and that is just what they are: many cell types have been described under different names in the literature, and this subdictionary is simply an attempt to make information pertaining to different cell types accessible. Thus the number of entries in this subdictionary does not reflect the number of "true" cell types. Vickaryous and Hall (2006) have published a review of human cell type diversity. The authors propose guidelines for characterising cell types, discuss cell homology and the various developmental pathways by which cell types arise, and list 411 cell types, including 145 types of neurons.


Methods to obtain pure cultures of primary and functionally intact cells
have been described for almost all cell types. Studies in vitro and in vivo have demonstrated that these cells have the capacity to express many different bioactive mediators. The expression of factors and/or the production and secretion of cytokines and growth factors frequently is context dependent, i.e., their expression is influenced by individual signals received but also by the balance of signals received through one or more receptors (which themselves may be subject to inducible/repressible expression).

Expression of most of these mediators is subject to modulation by cytokines, growth factors, hormones, exposure of cells to low molecular weight substances, proliferation and cell cycle state (quiescent or actively dividing cells), cell activation, differentiation, transformation stage, disease conditions, cell culture conditions (cell density, adhesion to substrate or growth as detached cells, single culture or coculture, subculturing), age (fetal, adult), gender, pregnancy, circadian rhythm influences, and other parameters. The expression capacity of cells frequently varies also with their anatomical location. In addition, there may be interstrain and interspecies differences, as well as differences between primary cells, established cell lines, number of cell passages, proliferating vs resting cells, or cell before or after cell activation. Inter-individual differences in the responses to cytokines and/or expression of various cytokines and growth factors must also be considered. Also, there may be variability between responses of cells taken from the same individual on different occasions (for an example see: Danis et al, 1996). It should be kept in mind also that some reported effects may be due simply to the presence of trace amounts of bacterial lipopolysaccharides (see, for example: Lieb et al, 1996).

Moieties containing subunits, such as receptors for a variety of cytokines, or cytokines themselves, may be expressed also differentially with respect to individual subunits. These can have bioactivities may be biologically inactive or may have bioactivities of their own (see, for example, IL12-p40, trans-signaling). It should be noted also that detection of cell surface expression of a protein or receptor does not necessarily imply functionality. Likewise, many reports describe expression in terms of mRNA, which does not necessarily imply that the protein is expressed. A protein may be expressed also as an immature proform. Cells may not produce the mature bioactive protein.


Information provided in individual entries cannot be more than a pointer to potentially relevant or interesting information. In the current version of COPE no attempt has been made to differentiate between cells from different organisms, subsets of cells characterized by a distinctive marker spectrum, etc. The exact cirumstances under which a given factor is expressed must be obtained from the original references. Please note also that the scientific literature contains much contradictory information with one publication stating explicitly, that a particular cell type does not produce a certain factor and other just stating the opposite.

Also, in citing references, I have not attempted to trace original publications first describing expression of a particular factor by the cells in question.

As pointed out in my foreword to COPE, I have limited myself mainly to cytokines, growth factors, and regulatory peptide factors although the scope of COPE entries has widened considerably since I began work on it. I have left out the plethora of low molecular weight substances that have a direct effect on the functional bioactivities of cells, as well as a many other proteins and their receptors governing the bioactivities of the cell types in question. To give just two examples of many, demonstrating the activities of low molecular weight compounds: ATP stimulates several events that are important for cell proliferation: DNA synthesis, protein synthesis, increase of cell number, immediate early genes, cell cycle progression, and tyrosine phosphorylation. ATP acts synergistically with polypeptide growth factors (PDGF, bFGF, IGF-1, EGF, insulin) and growth factors acting via G-protein-coupled receptors (noradrenaline, neuropeptide Y, 5-hydroxytryptamine, angiotensin-2, endothelin-1) (Erlinge, 1998). Sphingosine-1-phosphate and Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA), acting through a family of related G-protein-coupled receptors, have a plethora of effects on cell functions (see: S1PR1 (CD363) for one of the sphingosine-1-phosphate receptors).


NOTE: in the list below boldfaced entries with a red dot ( ¥ ) provide extensively referenced information about the expression by this cell type of cytokines, growth factors, receptors, CD antigens and other factors. Expression profile information lists entities only for which there is an entry in COPE or one of its subdictionaries.

Format for expression information in individual cell type entries
I use a simple format for proteins (

If you do not find a protein name in the alphabetical list try to use the browser search function as the name may be in the list of alternative designations that follow an entry term.

Expression of a protein is listed in an entry if it is verified biochemically, immunologically, or through cloning, PCR, or functional assays.
Expression of receptors for a protein is listed if a publication describes direct detection or if receptor expression can be inferred from cloning, PCR, or cellular responses to a given ligand. Please note that many receptors have more than one ligand and that many proteins can bind to different receptors. A given publication may not contain clarifying information. To illustrate the point such cases are treated as follows:

Reference 1 may report, for example, that FGF-19 and FGF-21 elicit a biological response in a given cell type without containing additional information about the receptors. Therefore, the expression list would contain the following entries, based on the observed bioactivities:

The same principle applies, for example, to HB-EGF and TGF-alpha, which compete with EGF for binding to the EGF receptor. It also applies to chemokines, which may act through different receptors (all of which have names of their own), or to other growth factors such as NGF, neurotrophins, semaphorins, VEGF, to name a few. It should be kept in mind also that many receptors consist of more than one subunit. Cells may not express all subunits. You will have to consult the original publications for detailed information.
In other words: the expression lists found for many cell types are only as good as the data obtainable from scientific references and may actually contain "hidden" information. For example, cells expressing FGF-19 receptors should express either FGFR1, FGFR2, or FGFR3, even if this is not listed specifically. Cells said to express HB-EGF receptors express the EGF receptor even though this may not be in the list. Conversely, cells expressing FGFR1, FGFR2, or FGFR3 should respond to FGF-19 or FGF-21, even if this was not shown. Cells expressing the EGF receptor should respond to HB-EGF or TGF-alpha, which, again, may not be listed.


I have taken pains to scan the available literature. It should be clear, however, that the expression lists provided, although fairly comprehensive at times, can never be complete. I add to these lists on a regular basis as I go along with my work on COPE. It is a never-ending project. Please bear in mind that I do this single-handedly. You could greatly assist by having a look at the HELP REQUEST and act accordlingly.
