(approved gene symbol) [apoptosis inducing factor mitochondrion associated 1; mitochondrion associated apoptosis inducing factor-1] This protein has been described originally as AIF [apoptosis inducing factor] and subsequently was renamed PDCD8 [programmed cell death-8]. The Caenorhabditis elegans ortholog is WAH-1. The murine counterpart is known as Harlequin.
The human AIFM1 gene maps to chromosome Xq25-q26 and comprises 14 exons (Susin et al, 1999; Daugas et al, 2000).
