also: acetylcholine acetylhydrolase; abbr. AChE. approved gene symbol ACHE. Acetylcholinesterase expressed on red blood cells has been shown to provide the molecular basis of the Yt blood group (Cartwright blood group).
Acetylcholinesterase is known mainly as the enzyme that terminates signal transduction at the neuromuscular junction by rapid hydrolysis of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine released into the synaptic cleft.
The enzyme has been shown also to possess non-hydrolytic functions (see: Greenfield et al, 2008; Greenfield, 1996, 2013 for overview) and has been suggested to act as a signalling molecule in key brain regions. These non-cholinergic effects of the enzyme can be both acute and chronic and are mimicked by two fragments,
