approved gene symbol: AARS; called also Alanine-tRNA ligase; abbr. also AlaRS. In the nomenclature of enzymes the synthetase has been given the designation EC6.1.1.7. The enzyme, which belongs to the class of aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases, has been identified independently as NY-REN-42 [Renal carcinoma antigen NY-REN-42] (Scanlan et al, 1999). Alanyl-tRNA synthetase catalyzes the attachment of alanine to tRNA-ala and thus plays an essential role in protein synthesis.
