This protein, termed also anthralysin B, is one of the hemolytic proteins of Bacillus anthracis produced under strict anaerobic growth conditions (Klichko et al, 2003; Read et al, 2003). It encodes a protein that functions as a cholesterol-binding pore-forming factor.
Popova et al (2006) have reported that the isolated Bacillus anthracis hemolytic protein causes the accelerated shedding of Syndecan-1 (CD138) and E-cadherin (CD324) from epithelial cells and compromises epithelial barrier integrity within a few hours.
AnlB does not act directly but is a shedding inducer. Its action involves the stimulation of cytoplasmic tyrosine kinases
