[APJ receptor ligand; APJ endogenous ligand] Apelin (approved gene symbol: APLN; abbr. also: APEL) is a peptide isolated originally from bovine stomach tissue extracts. The Apelin gene (human chromosome Xq25-q26.3) encodes a protein of 77 amino acids that includes a secretory signal sequence of 22 amino acids and a propeptide of 19 amino acids (Tatemoto et al, 1998, 2001). This sequence can generate several biologically active C-terminal fragments of various sizes (Lee et al, 2000). Apelin is highly conserved among different species, and the C-terminal 13 amino acids (65-77) are completely conserved across all species studied (Lee et al, 2000). Apelin from Xenopus laevis
