[Vaccinia virus B15R protein] B15R is a vaccinia virus gene (B15R in the WR strain; B16R [Vaccinia virus B16R protein] in other strains; encoded by vaccinia virus ORF 184R).
B15R encodes a secreted glycoprotein of 33 kDa functioning as a soluble receptor for one of the molecular forms of murine IL1. B15R protein specifically binds to IL1-beta, but not to IL1-alpha or to the IL1 receptor antagonist known as IL1ra (Vaccinia virus IL1-beta receptor).
Viruses with a deleted B15R gene have been found to be much more virulent than wild type viruses. Following intranasal injection of mice
