The human gene, which gives rise to two transcripts, termed bradeion-alpha and bradeion-beta, has been identified by Tanaka et al (2001). The encoded protein belongs to the septin family and is now being referred to as septin 4 (see: ARTS [apoptosis-related protein in the TGF-beta signaling pathway]). Bradeion is expressed mainly in brain and slightly in heart, and no expression is seen in any fetal organs. Bradeion is expressed also in two human cancers, colorectal cancer and malignant melanoma. In vivo studies with mice demonstrate marked tumor growth suppression by a Bradeion-specific ribozymes.
