In the nomenclature of CD antigens this protein has been given the designation CD35.
Humans and other primates have a distinct CR1 gene, whereas the mouse differs in that a single mouse CR2 gene encodes both CR1 and CR2, with CR1 being generated via alternative splicing while primates utilize distinct genes for the CR1 and CR2 proteins (for overview see: Jacobson AC, Weis, 2008).
