This term has been used in several different ways.

_____________________________________________________________________________

(-1-) enhancing factor

A general term used to describe factors that enhance a recognizable biological activity, as in IgA-EF (see: IL5), IgE-EF (see: IL4), and IgG1-EF (see: IL4). In these cases the biological activity is the enhanced synthesis of the immunoglobulins.

_____________________________________________________________________________

(-2-) enhancing factor

This biochemically uncharacterized 14 kDa factor is isolated from the murine small intestines. It is produced predominantly from Paneth cells at the base of the crypts of Lieberkühn thought to be of functional importance as an unspecific defense system.

The factor appears to be a modulator of EGF activity, increasing the binding of EGF to its receptor on A431 cells.
