Gicerin is an integral membrane glycoprotein of about 82 kDa (584 amino acids) that belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily and functions as a cell adhesion molecule. It binds neurite outgrowth factor (NOF), an extracellular matrix glycoprotein belonging to the laminin family, which promotes neurite extension from neuronal cells (Taira et al, 1994; Takaha et al, 1995).
1-gicerin and (90 kDa) s-gicerin (82 kDa) are two splice isoforms of Gicerin (Taira et al, 1995).
In the nomenclature of CD antigens this protein has been given the designation CD146.
