[hippocampal cholinergic neurostimulating peptide] HCNP is a biologically active regulatory peptide factor (Ala-Ala-Asp-Ile-Ser-Gln-Trp-Ala-Gly-Pro-Leu; AADISQWAGPL) isolated from the soluble fraction of young rat hippocampus and released from hippocampus by the stimulation of N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptors (Ojika et al, 1992). The peptide is derived by proteolytic cleavage (Otsuka and Ojika, 1996; Tohdo et al, 1997) from a larger precursor protein, designated HCNP-pp (HCNP precursor protein) (Mitake et al, 1995; Tohdoh et al, 1995), which is a multifunctional protein identified independently as neuropolypeptide h3, PEBP [
