Humanin
abbr. HN. Humanin is a secreted peptide of 24 amino acids (MAPRGFSCLLLLTSEIDLPVKRRA). The peptide is encoded by the Mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene (approved gene symbol: MTRNR2; abbr. also: RNR2; 16S/MT-RNR2) (Maximov et al, 2002; Tajima et al, 2002). Humanin was first described as a rescue factor that prevents neuronal cell death caused by a wide spectrum of familial Alzheimer's disease genes and A-beta (Hashimoto et al, 2001, 2001).
Paharkova et al (2015) have reported that rat humanin is derived and translated from an open reading frame within rat mitochondrial DNA
