KAF

This term has been used in several different ways.

_____________________________________________________________________________

(-1-) cytotoxic killer T-cell activating factor

This biochemically uncharacterized factor is an acidic protein of 70-100 kDa produced by some macrophage-like cell lines and the human monocytic leukemia cell line THP-1. It activates human cytotoxic killer T-lymphocytes in vitro against autologous tumors.

LAST MODIFIED: January 2002

(-2-) keratinocyte-derived autocrine factor

The known 20 aminoterminal amino acids of KAF are completely identical with AR (amphiregulin) and the factor is called also, therefore, Keratinocyte-derived amphiregulin. Antibodies directed against KAF also recognise amphiregulin.

KAF is produced by keratinocytes and mammary epithelial cells. It stimulates the growth of human keratinocytes (see also: autocrine) and some murine cell lines. Its mitogenic activity is inhibited by heparin and dextran sulfate (see also: HBGF, heparin binding growth factors). Heparin sulfate also inhibits the competition of KAF for the EGF receptor.

(-3-) kidney angiogenic factor

This factor was isolated initially from bovine kidney as a mitogenic for endothelial cells (see also: Angiogenesis). It is identical with bFGF.

See also: Angiogenesis Dictionary section of this encyclopedia for other entries directly bearing on factors and processes involved in the generation of new blood vessels.
