M-sema G is a member of the semaphorin gene family. Individual members of this family contribute to axon guidance by their repellent actions. The murine gene has been identified by Furuyama et al (1996). The encoded protein is most closely related to M-sema F.
The M-sema G gene is expressed strongly in lymphoid tissues (lymphocytes), especially in the thymus, but also in the nervous tissues. mRNAs are detected also in various ematopoietic cell lines.
This protein has been renamed SEMA4D (Semaphorin 4D) (Semaphorin Nomenclature Committee, 1999). In the nomenclature of CD antigens the protein has been given the designation
