[macrophage-derived blastogenic factor] This biochemically uncharacterized factor of 29-35 kDa is secreted from human or murine macrophages stimulated with galactose oxidase, a well-characterized enzyme able to induce marked polyclonal activation of lymphocytes (Antonelli et al, 1988). It stimulates resting T-lymphocytes to proliferate and to produce IFN-gamma. The activity of MBF is not neutralized by antibodies to IL1.
Ausiello et al (1992) have reported that the factor induces IL1-beta, IL2, and TNF-alpha and generation of MHC-unrestricted cytotoxic activity in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells.
