The MIC5 gene located on human chromosome Xq27-q28 encodes a cell surface protein defined by monoclonal antibody R1 developed at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund (hence the name) (Hope et al, 1982). The gene has been shown to encode the cell adhesion molecule L1CAM (Patel et al, 1992).
In the nomenclature of CD antigens this antigen has been given the designation CD171.
