This peptide is derived from mitochondrial MTND1 [NADH dehydrogenase, subunit 1; complex I subunit ND1; NADH-ubiquinone oxidoreductase, subunit ND1], identified originally as a minor histocompatibility antigen called MTF-alpha [maternally transmitted factor-alpha] (Loveland et al, 1990). The peptide has been shown to act through the G-protein-coupled receptor FPRL1 [formyl peptide receptor-like-1; FPR-like-1] and stimulate phagocytosis of apoptotic polymorphonuclear cells through a process associated with increased TGF-beta-1 release (Mitchell et al, 2002)
