abbr. MDF (a term with multiple meanings). MDF activities (100-70 and 8-12 kDa) are found in the conditioned medium of human peripheral blood leukocytes treated with bacterial lipopolysaccharides. Both molecular forms of MDF induce the proliferation of cultured mesangial cells and do not induce the proliferation of thymocytes. MDF is different from IL1 or IL6. The activity of the low molecular weight factor is partially inhibited by antibodies directed against PDGF, suggesting that some of the activity may be due to PDGF. The high molecular weight factor is not affected by anti-PDGF antibodies (Morioka et al, 1991).
