This term has multiple meanings:
(-1-) The existence of the Mx gene (mx symbol derived from myxovirus = influenza resistance, the gene being called myxovirus resistance 1) was initially inferred from genetic analysis of certain strains of mice that display an inborn resistance against infection with influenza A and B viruses. Mx homologous proteins have been found also in all other eukaryotes investigated so far. Some Mx proteins display a broader antiviral profile than the one observed for Mx1 in mice. Others, however, are seemingly devoid of antiviral activities, including human MxB, rat Mx3, and duck Mx. The proteins are expressed also in species that are not resistant to these viruses.
