Takahashi et al (1999) have given the name nectin (Latin: "necto" meaning "to connect") to PRR [poliovirus receptor-related] following the observation that this protein is a cell-cell adhesion molecule of the immunoglobulin superfamily which is recruited to cadherin-based cell-cell adherens junctions through interaction with the actin filament-binding protein afadin. Nectin is the same as Nectin-1 (renamed again following the identification of Nectin-2). Nectin-1-alpha and Nectin-1-delta are splice variants. Nectin-1-alpha corresponds to HIgR [Herpesvirus Ig-like receptor], whereas Nectin-1-delta
