abbr. NBN. Neublastin is a distant member of the TGF-beta family. The factor is identical with Artemin and has been described independently as Enovin.
Neublastin has been shown to elicit neurotrophic effects upon several classes of peripheral and central neurons. The factor provides neuronal cell protection and cell survival (Baudet et al, 2000; Rosenblad et al, 2000). Bonde et al (2000) have reported a neuroprotective effect of Neublastin beyond its trophic effects on dopaminergic neurons, showing that it protects against NMDA-induced excitotoxicity in hippocampal slice cultures.
