OL-64

Gene OL-64 has been identified by Hida et al (2000) in the Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima fatty (OLETF) rat, an animal model of type 2 diabetes, characterized by abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. OL-64 encodes a secreted protein which has been classified as an adipokine. The gene is expressed in visceral adipose tissue of the obese OLETF rat, but not in the diabetes-resistant Long-Evans Tokushima Otsuka (LETO) rat. Hida et al (2000) have sequenced the C-terminal part of the protein, which identifies it as a member of the serine proteinase inhibitor family. The protein is the same as SERPINA12 and is known as Vaspin.
