This protein is expressed by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is known also as Rv1196 or mtb39a. PPE18 is a member of a family of proteins characterized by the presence of conserved N-terminal domain containing proline-proline-glutamic acid (PPE) motif with considerable variation in the C-terminal region (Cole et al, 1998).
PPE18 is one of the highly expressed genes in M. tuberculosis as compared with M. bovis (Rehren et al, 2007). The protein has been shown to elicit T-cell proliferation. Non-secretory and PPE18-immunized mice have lower bacterial load upon challenge with M. tuberculosis (Dillon et al, 1999).
Nair et al (2009) have reported that PPE18 can trigger an anti-inflammatory response by inducing IL10
