abbr. PRDX5 (approved gene symbol), PRX5. The protein has been isolated from bronchoalveolar lavage fluid by Wattiez et al (1999), who named it B166. A cDNA encoding the protein, called antioxidant enzyme B166 (abbr. AOEB166), has been isolated by Knoops et al (1999). Zhou et al (2000) have identified human and mouse peroxiredoxin-5 by virtue of sequence homologies to yeast peroxisomal antioxidant enzyme PMP20 [peroxisomal membrane protein 20] and shown that this protein is a thioredoxin peroxidase. The enzyme participates directly in eliminating hydrogen peroxide and neutralizing other reactive oxygen species
