Plexins constitute a large family of proteins identified originally in Xenopus laevis. The term Plexin refers to a member of the plexin family identified originally in Xenopus laevis as a neuronal cell surface molecule (termed originally B2 (Ohta et al, 1992) involved in the formation of retinal plexiform layers. Ohta et al (1995) have shown that this molecule mediates cell adhesion via a homophilic binding mechanism in the presence of calcium ions. In databanks this Plexin is being referred to as Plexin-A1. Fujisawa and Ohta (1997) have reported a role in neuron network formation.
