This bioactive peptide (ESIVRPPPVEAKVEETPE) has been isolated from the venom of the Brazilian freshwater stingray Potamotrygon gr. orbigyni (Smooth back river stingray) (Conceição et al, 2009). Porflan and its N-terminal fragment (Porflan-N (1ESIVRPPPVE10)) have been shown to induce a significant increase in the number of rolling leukocytes in mouse post-capillary venules. Porflan-C (9VEAKVEETPE18) does not induce an increase in leukocyte rolling but shows toxic activity. Immediately after topic application, abundant thrombi of different sizes are observed in the venules, and after 5 min, stasis is observed in post-capillary venules. The three peptides have no effect on vascular permeability or capillary diameter.
