Assier et al (1999) have named these human and murine proteins (98 % sequence identity, 557 amino acids) after the extensive stretch of alternating arginine (R) and glutamic acid (E) or aspartic acid (D) residues (arg-glu-asp repeats) that they contain. These genes are expressed in a wide range of tissues and the proteins have a nuclear location. Part of the sequence of RED is identical with that of IK factor.
