[Stromal interaction molecule 1] STIM1 is identical with a gene named GOK, isolated as a chromosome 11p15.5-specific transcript from placental and fetal liver cDNA libraries. The human and mouse proteins display 90 % sequence identity (Parker et al, 1996). Homologous proteins have been found in Caenorhabditis elegans and Drosophila melanogaster (Williams et al, 2001).
STIM1 is a cell surface transmembrane glycoprotein implicated in tumor growth control (Sabbioni et al, 1999) and interactions between stromal cells and hematopoietic cells (see also: hematopoiesis).
