Sapecin is a peptide of 40 amino acid (ATCDLLSGTGINHSACAAHCLLRGNRGGYCNGKAVCVCRN) purified from the conditioned medium of NIH-Sape-4, an embryonic cell line of Sarcophaga peregrina (flesh fly) (Matsuyama and Natori, 1988). The protein contains three disulfide bridges essential for bioactivity (Kuzuhara et al, 1990). A homolog of Sapecin, termed holotricin-1, has been isolated from the coleopteran insect, Holotrichia diomphalia.
Sapecin preferentially represses the growth of various Gram-positive bacteria. The gene for the sapecin precursor is activated in the hemocytes
