abbr. SP-G [Surfactant-associated protein G; surfactant associated 2]. The approved gene symbol for this protein is SFTA2 [Surfactant-associated protein 2]. The protein has no sequence or structural identity to other surfactant proteins.
Mittal et al (2012) have reported that the protein is secreted and expressed predominantly by alveolar type 2 pneumocytes in the lung but also in nonciliated epithelium in bronchioli. Lower levels of the protein are found in cervix, esophagus, stomach, testis and kidney. In the mouse lung, Surfactant protein G expression is downregulated significantly after induction of an inflammation by intratracheal lipopolysaccharide
