TMEM166 is a membrane protein found in lysosomes and endoplasmic reticulum. Overexpression of TMEM166 markedly inhibits colony formation in HeLa cells in a colony formation assay and causes autophagy or cell death by apoptosis. Suppression of TMEM166 expression inhibits starvation-induced autophagy in HeLa cells.
He et al (2009) have identified TMEM166 as one of several genes the overexpression of which induces high levels of autophagosome formation (see also: autophagy).
