Vpu

[Viral protein U; HIV-1 protein U] Vpu is an accessory protein encoded in the genome of Human Immunodeficiency Virus 1, HIV-1. Vpu is a transmembrane protein of approximately 16 kDa (p16) and serves as an immune evasion protein in several ways. The protein has been shown to degrade CD4, which also serves as the HIV-1 entry receptor (Willey et al, 1992; Schubert U et al, 1998; Magadan et al, 2010). This requires complex interactions with several host proteins and leads to retention of newly synthesized CD4 in the endoplasmic reticulum and degradation (Margottin et al, 1998; Magadan et al, 2010; Binette et al, 2007).
