[Axis inhibition protein 1, Axis inhibitor 1] This is the same as axin, a name given by Zeng et al (1997) to the protein encoded by the fused (abbr. fu; also axin(Fu)) gene mutation in mice, which causes various types of asymmetrical fusions of vertebrae, ribs fused at their proximal ends but separating into the component ribs at any place along their length, lack of the whole tail or part of it, or bifurcation of the tail (Reed, 1937).
