This antibacterial proline-rich peptide of 19 amino acids (GKPRPYSPRPTSHPRPIRV) has been identified by Bulet et al (1993) in Drosophila melanogaster. The peptide, encoded by the CG10816 gene, is O-glycosylated (N-acetylgalactosamine plus a galactose) and this modification is required for maximum biological activity. Drosocin is active mainly against Gram-negative bacteria with the exception of the Gram-positive bacteria Micrococcus luteus. Deletion of the first five N-terminal residues completely abolish the activity of Drosocin (Bulet et al, 1996). Glycosylated Drosocin is active against Escherichia coli in the hemolymph of flies but inactive in vivo in the mouse
