This secreted protein (439 amino acids), has been termed fibroleukin by Marazzi et al (1998), T49 by Rüegg and Pytela (1995), and pT49 by Koyama et al (1987). The approved gene symbol is FGL2 [fibrinogen-like-2; Fibrinogen-like protein 2]. The protein is related to fibrinogen. Olson et al (2004) have reported that hamster HEP64, a protein in the proximal cauda epididymidis that specifically binds and coats nonviable, but not viable, spermatozoa within the epididymal lumen, is identical with fibroleukin and may play a role in the disposal of defective spermatozoa.
